Susanne wanted to be a nurse for as long as she can remember, but also wanted to be a teacher. As a nurse navigator, she does both, spending her time explaining and educating patients about every aspect of their care. She’s not just a nurse, she’s “their ‘go-to’ person,” she says, connecting patients with the help they need to heal and recuperate, and offering a shoulder to lean on and ear to listen. From her first days as a volunteer “Candy Striper” at a local hospital while in high school, Barbara saw the tremendous difference a nurse can make in patients’ lives. Now the long longtime nurse herself spends her days helping patients make appointments — and find ways to reduce anxiety. Her role, she says, is to “be the person my patients can call on, somebody who they can depend on to be here for them.” Barbara specializes in working with patients who have thoracic and hematological cancers. After witnessing the impact that nurses had on her two older sisters during their pregnancies, Erin knew she wanted to become a nurse. “Nurses can lift patients’ spirits during difficult times,” she says. “I wanted to make a difference in the world one patient at a time.” Working with a team of multidisciplinary cancer specialists to coordinate care, Erin eases her patients’ confusion and feelings of being overwhelmed, all while providing the best care available.
